U6 to U18 Developmental

The Developmental league a.k.a Recreational, is designed for all kids of all abilities to have the chance to play soccer. The games are fun and stress is not put on the competitiveness of the game.

  • Each team will play 8 games.
  • There are no tryouts for this league, everyone gets a chance to play.
  • Teams normally practice twice a week.
  • All coaches at the Developmental level are volunteer coaches and are not paid.
  • All players must purchase a Skyline uniform. The uniform consists of two jerseys, 1 short, 1 pair of socks. Skyline does not provide the uniforms.
  • Registration for the Developmental league is $120.00 a season. A $25.00 late fee is applied to all late registrations.
  • All games are played on Saturday and times will vary. Games are either played within the Skyline club or are played against nearby clubs.
  • Travel within the south part of Denver is required for game against other clubs.

Player Placement on Teams:

Returning players will be given first priority for team placement as long as they have:
1. Registered and paid by the registration deadline
2. Requested to have the same team and/or coach

New players are placed on teams where space is available and are given the following priorities:
1. Staff recommendations
2. Firt come, first serve
3. What team or coach was requested

Here is an outline of the Developmental divisions:

U6 and U7: Teams usually practice once a week and have an eight-game season.  Games are played on micro fields with small goals in a 4v4 (U6) and 5v5 (U7) format with no goalies.  Emphasis is on improving basic skills and having fun - teams are encouraged not to keep score.  All games are played at Kennedy Soccer Complex. All games are refereed by parent volunteers.

U8: Practices are generally held twice a week and teams play on larger fields in a 6v6 format with goalkeepers.  Eight games are scheduled during the season against Skyline teams as well as teams from other southeast area clubs.  Focus is continuing improvement on basic skills as well as positions and teamwork.  Games are played at Southmoor Park. All games are refereed by parent volunteers.

U9 and U10:  Teams practice twice a week and play on a field big enough for an 8v8 format with goalkeepers.  Eight games are played against Skyline teams as well as teams from other southeast area clubs.  Focus is continuing improvement on basic skills as well as positions and teamwork.  Games are played at Kennedy Soccer Complex. All games are refereed by certified Skyline referees and by parent volunteers.

U11 - U14: Teams play in the 11v11 format with goalies.  Teams practice twice a week and their eight game season is played against Skyline and other south Denver area teams.  Individual player skills are emphasized, as well as improving on basic skills, teamwork, and positional play.  Games are played at Ash Grove, Cook Park, and Kennedy Soccer Complex. All games are refereed by certified Skyline referees.

U15 - U18 Metro League: Teams play in the 8v8 format on an 11v11 field with goalies.  Teams practice once or twice a week and their eight game season is played against Skyline and other south Denver area teams.  Girls play in the spring and boys play in the fall (girls can play on the boys' team). Games are played at Ash Grove, Cook Park, and Kennedy Soccer Complex. All games are refereed by certified Skyline referees.

Become a Volunteer Coach

Almost all programs at Skyline Soccer Association are coached by volunteer coaches. Most of the time, the coach has a child on the team they are coaching. To compensate each head coach for their time and effort they put forth each season, Skyline waives the registration fees for one child. All volunteer coaches must submit to a background check before any coaching begins. If needed, Skyline staff put on coaching clinics for new coaches. Also, Skyline's club coaches do their best to make it out to each teams practice at least twice during the season to help give the players a professional's perspective on coaching and to teach the volunteer coach some new drills.

What's Next

The Developmental league is a great beginner league for many individuals. Depending on your age, you will have opportunities to advance into more competitive leagues or you may just choose to stay in the Developmental league. Please refer to the program "flow chart" for a more detailed breakdown of progression through the Skyline Soccer League.

The Developmental league is all we offer at the U6 to U8 level. At the U9 level, you can either play in a more competitive league called Cross Quad or stay within the Developmental league. At the U10 level, you can move to the Intermediate (Option 1) league, which is a more competitive level or continue to stay within the Developmental league. The U10 to U11 transision is a significant year for many players. This is the opportunity for soccer enthusiasts to try out for Competitive soccer. If players want to see the more competitive side of soccer, without the insignia of Competitive soccer, many will join the Intermediate league. Also, you can continue to stay within the Developmental league until the U14 age group. If you are not already playing Competitive or Intermediate soccer with Skyline at the U15 age group, you can go on to play in the Metro league.
